Online Psychologist | Psychological Consultations from Home

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in one of two situations. Either you already know you need a psychologist but don’t want to go to an office. Or you’re wondering whether an online psychologist can really help you as much as a face-to-face session. In both cases, the answer is one: yes, they can. And not only can they — in many ways, the online format is the better option.

My name is Vladimir Novkov. I’m a sport and social psychologist with a Master’s degree from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and an ISSA-certified Elite Trainer. I work online with clients from all over Bulgaria — from Sofia and Plovdiv to Varna, Burgas, and small towns where access to a sport psychologist is practically impossible. I also work with Bulgarians abroad for whom the connection with a Bulgarian-speaking specialist matters.

This page will explain how online psychological consultations work, why they are effective, who they are suitable for, and how you can get started.

What is an online psychological consultation?

An online psychological consultation is a structured meeting between you and me, conducted via video call. There is no fundamental difference from an in-person consultation — we talk, analyze, and work with specific techniques. The only difference is that you’re at home, in the office, or wherever is convenient for you, rather than in an office.

Each session lasts 60 minutes and is focused on a specific topic: motivational block, pre-competition anxiety, loss of form, emotional eating, burnout, or something else that’s holding you back. We don’t have “free conversations” without direction. Every meeting has structure, purpose, and an assignment for the period until the next session.

I work through a secure video platform that guarantees confidentiality. You don’t need to install special software — a browser and a stable internet connection are sufficient. Whether you’re in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, or another city in Bulgaria, or even abroad — the process is exactly the same.

Why online consultations are effective

I know what you’re thinking. “Can you really achieve something through a screen?” This is a legitimate question, and the answer is unequivocal: yes.

Back in 2008, Barak, Hen, Boniel-Nissim, and Shapira published a large-scale meta-analysis (92 studies, over 9,000 participants) showing that online psychological interventions are statistically equivalent in effectiveness to face-to-face ones. The average effect size (d = 0.53) is comparable to traditional therapy. This is not a marginal study — it has been cited over 3,000 times and remains foundational in the field of telepsychology.

Since then, the evidence has only accumulated. The American Psychological Association (APA) has official telepsychology guidelines confirming that the online format is an adequate and effective alternative. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift not only in practice but also in public perception — millions of people worldwide transitioned to online consultations, and most of them did not return to the office format.

Why does it work? Because psychological work is primarily a conversation. The cognitive techniques I use — analysis of automatic thoughts, restructuring beliefs, working with inner dialogue — do not require physical presence. They require connection, trust, and structure. All three can be built online just as well as face to face.

How the online session works

The process is clear and structured. Here’s what to expect step by step:

1
Book a free discovery call
Go to Calendly and choose a convenient time. This is a 30-minute video meeting where we get to know each other. You tell me what brought you here, what your goals are, and what you’ve tried so far. I assess whether my approach is right for you. No commitment, no pressure.
2
Single consultation (optional)
A 60-minute video consultation focused on one specific problem — loss of motivation, pre-competition stress, training blocks, emotional eating. You get access to SportPersonalities Premium. The single consultation can be standalone (see Single Consultation) or a first step toward the Synergistic Protocol.
3
Regular sessions every 2 weeks
If you continue with the Synergistic Protocol, we work through 6 video sessions over 12 weeks. Each session is 60 minutes, focused on a specific problem or skill. Between sessions, you have assignments for real-life application — mental skills are built through practice, not just conversations.
4
Chat support between sessions
I don’t leave you on your own for two weeks. You have access to me via chat for questions, feedback, and real-time adjustments. If something challenges you between sessions, you write and receive a response.
5
SportPersonalities Premium Profile
As part of the program, you gain access to the SportPersonalities platform — a detailed digital profile that visualizes your psychological dimensions and tracks your development over time.

Who is the online consultation suitable for

I work primarily with athletes and physically active people, but my approach is not limited to elite sport. Here are the profiles of people for whom the online format works best:

01
Athletes
Runners, triathletes, martial artists, weightlifters, tennis players, CrossFit athletes. People who train seriously and want their mental preparation to match their physical training.
02
Active people in transition
Loss of motivation, returning after injury, life changes (new job, child, relocation) that have disrupted the training rhythm. The body is ready, but the mind has given up.
03
Bulgarians abroad
You live in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, or anywhere else, but want to work with a Bulgarian-speaking psychologist who understands both the context and the language. The online format removes the geographical barrier.
04
People in smaller cities
In Bulgaria, access to a sport psychologist outside Sofia is extremely limited. If you live in Blagoevgrad, Stara Zagora, Ruse, or Pleven, the online consultation gives you access to a specialist without traveling.
05
Busy professionals
Managers, entrepreneurs, and people with a demanding schedule for whom 60 minutes from home is realistic, while 60 minutes plus travel to an office is not.

If you’re not sure whether your case falls within the scope of my work, book a free discovery call and we’ll figure it out together. See also: Personal development consultations — for people outside sport.

My approach: CBT, REBT, Stoicism, and experiential techniques online

My approach is integrative — I combine cognitive, philosophical, and experiential methods that work exceptionally well in the online format — because they are based on conversation, directed attention, and cognitive work, not on physical presence.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the gold standard in the psychology of behavioral change. We work with the automatic thoughts that sabotage your efforts — “There’s no point,” “I’m not disciplined enough,” “Others can, I can’t.” We identify cognitive distortions (catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, mind-reading) and replace them with more accurate, more functional beliefs. The entire process is verbal — perfect for the online setting.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) goes one step deeper. While CBT works with surface-level thoughts, REBT attacks the core irrational beliefs — “I must be perfect,” “If I fail, it means I’m a loser,” “People must approve of me.” These beliefs often underlie chronic lack of motivation and procrastination. When you uncover and challenge them, behavior changes.

Stoicism applied to sport is the third pillar. Epictetus’s dichotomy of control — focus on what you can control and let go of the rest — is perhaps the most powerful tool for athletes. You don’t control the outcome of a competition. You control your preparation, effort, and reaction. This philosophical framework provides calm and clarity that no motivational video can deliver.

Logotherapy (Viktor Frankl) complements the cognitive work with the search for meaning. When a client knows “what” to change but can’t find “why,” we work with the values and motivation behind their goals. Frankl observed that people who have a “why” can endure almost any “how” — and this is valid in sport as well as in life.

Body awareness and mindfulness add an experiential dimension. I guide the client to notice what’s happening in their body — tension, breathing, sensations — without requiring physical contact. The entire process is verbally guided: “Close your eyes. Where do you feel the tension?” This is equally effective online and in person, because the work happens inside the client.

These methods are based on conversation and directed attention. They don’t require special equipment, physical exercises in an office, or in-person elements. That’s why the online format is not a compromise — it is a full-fledged channel for the same work.

Advantages of the online format

I’ll be straightforward: for my clients, the online format is not Plan B. It is the primary format of work, and here’s why:

  • Flexibility. The session fits into your schedule, not the other way around. Early morning before work, lunch break, evening after training — you choose.
  • No time wasted commuting. In Sofia, 30 minutes of travel one way is an optimistic estimate. The online session starts with one click.
  • Comfort of a familiar environment. Many of my clients share that they relax more easily when they’re at home. No unfamiliar surroundings, no waiting room, no discomfort.
  • Continuity. Competition in another city? Training camp? Business trip? The session continues on schedule. No interruptions due to travel — neither yours nor mine.
  • Access from anywhere in Bulgaria and abroad. Whether you’re in Sofia, Varna, Burgas, Ruse, or Munich — the quality of work is identical.
  • Lower barrier to getting started. For many, the first step toward a psychologist is the hardest. When you can take it from your couch, without entering an unfamiliar building — the threshold is lower.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be an athlete to work with you?

Not necessarily. I also work with people outside sport — entrepreneurs, people in life transitions, people experiencing burnout and chronic stress. The tools that work on the field work everywhere. If your topic is not related to sport, see personal development consultations. If you’re looking for clinical psychotherapy for depression or anxiety disorder, I’ll refer you to an appropriate colleague.

What do I need for an online session?

A computer, tablet, or phone with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for 60 minutes. No special software is needed — I send a link that you open in your browser.

Is it really as effective as in person?

Yes. The meta-analysis by Barak et al. (2008) and subsequent research confirm that online psychological interventions achieve comparable results to in-person ones. In my practice, clients who work online achieve identical progress. The key factor is not the channel, but the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the structure of the work.

What is “Try It Yourself” and who is it suitable for?

Try It Yourself is a self-paced workbook program with 6 modules that contains the core of my methodology: motivation, thinking under pressure, cognitive restructuring, mental resilience, and habits. It is suitable for people who prefer to work independently, or who want to get to know the method before signing up for individual work. It also includes access to your SportPersonalities Premium profile.

What does the Single Consultation include?

The Single Consultation is a 60-minute video consultation focused on one specific problem — loss of motivation, stress, blocks, emotional eating. You get access to SportPersonalities Premium. This is the best I can give you in one hour — a concrete intervention and a clear plan. If you decide to continue with the Synergistic Protocol within 30 days of the consultation, the amount is deducted.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. The Synergistic Protocol can be paid in full (€540 / 1050 BGN) or in three installments of €180 (350 BGN) per month. Details are discussed during the discovery call.

What happens if I can’t attend a session?

Life happens. If you can’t attend, we reschedule the session to another date within the program. The important thing is to let me know at least 24 hours in advance. Flexibility is one of the advantages of the online format — we find a solution.
